Korea’s Indepedence Day (My Day Off)!!!

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Today, Korea celebrates it’s independence from Japan. This is a profoundly important day, I’m sure; but, for me, it’s not much more than a day off! I know that this seems “heartless,” but it’s something you don’t really think about until you live in a foreign country.

I’m not quite sure why; but, although I call Korea home, the holidays here still have little to no meaning to me. One would think that living somewhere would evoke a sentimentality towards your host country’s holidays and events of historical importance- it doesn’t.

I live here. And, I like it, for the most part. But, my heart is elsewhere when it comes to what evokes an emotional (and intellectual response). I’m not emotionally invested in Korea’s Independence Day; but, appearing somewhat odd to me, I’m barely intellectually vested in the day. I’m well aware that it is holiday of significance to the Korean populace, but little more. I haven’t thought about “What am I going to do for Korea’s Independence Day?” I’ve slept a lot and worked on some personal projects.

I can’t offer any conjectures as to why I’m so unconcerned about this important day to my host country. All I can really say is that that is the way it is. I don’t mean any disrespect in my unconcerned condition- I’m just a 4th of July sort of man, I suppose.
