My Wedding Band

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 |

Many men look at their wedding band, and what they see is a curse; it’s that which attaches them to the “ol’ ball and chain.” If they could just get free, they would run as fast as they could, never looking back. It’s what prevents them from being free men.

I don’t see it that way.

When I look at my wedding band, I see an attachment, but not to a ball and chain. My band is what attaches me to that which anchors me to what is real in life- the love between Noo-dang and I. It is the part of my lifeline that must hold when the rogue waves of the world broad side the ship of my life.

My band has an inscription that reads “Dee ♥ Dang Forever.” When it was set upon my finger, I made sure that it was turned where I could read it. My angle was the most important, for when I view it, I don’t see a contract I can’t get out of; I see a promise of something good lasting. In a world where impermanence seems to rule carte blanche, I can count on one thing proving that rule wrong… “Dee ♥ Dang Forever.” And, often, that little reminder that rests upon my finger makes all the difference.

My wife has proven true and devoted. In all the times of my life, she stands not behind me, but beside me. The band upon my reminds me that she deserves no less from me.

What an honor and a privilege to proclaim to the world that I belong to someone whole-heartedly. My wedding band helps me do that day in and day out. It is the most sacred of objects that I possess. If there were ever an object endowed with power, it is the band that sets upon my left hand.

Like my wedding band reminds me… now and forever, Dee ♥ Dang.

On Sat, Dang and I went to our Korean class. This was the first for us. They started us out with the Korean alphabet, Hangul. It makes a good deal of sense and should be easy to learn. I’m not very impressed with the teacher… not much of a teacher, in my opinion. But, it’s cheap and we are learning.

Afterward, we made a trip to Itaewon with some friends, another Thai-American couple. They seem to be nice people, and dinner with them was a lot of fun. The guy, whose name is Dennis, was an interesting chap… it was nice to talk with an American for a change.

The following day, Dang went to have lunch with some of her Thai friends. She’s made friends with this small group of Thai expats, and has found Korea a bit more friendly because of it.

This past week was spent preparing for the children’s play. Every morning, Mon. thru Fri, we worked on that. The children worked quite hard, as well as did everyone else.

Fri. night, Dang and I treated ourselves to STEAK!!! Yes, I had a steak for the first time in a year. We found ourselves Outback. Maybe it was the fact that I didn’t have a steak in a year, but I’m quite certain that it was one of the best steaks I’ve ever eaten. Anyway, that aside, we had a great time, eating what we wanted without worry of cost. We talked while enjoying a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, which was good too. After that, it was ice cream!!! A lot of fun I had with my wife.

Sat. the 13th, I taught a private lesson in the morning, then I went to MC the children’s play. It was a two hour long show, and the children did great! Dang went to our Korean lessons for us… so we wouldn’t fall too far behind.

After the play, I had dinner with all of the teachers (Korean BBQ). It was fun, and, because their Koreans, there was a lot of alcohol. I’m afraid that I had my share, and it ended up making me very happy.

After dinner, a group of us went to karaoke. Dang was home by then, and she joined us. I sang several songs, or at least tried. It was fun. While I was sitting there, I realized that I’m in a foreign country with my wife singing songs with a bunch of people who I never thought I would call friends. But, there we were, singing, being silly, and having fun.

All-in-all, it was a good week. Hope the next is as exciting.

Weekly Update: Jan. 25-31, 2009

This week marked a New Year (Chinese New Year), which is huge in South Korea. It’s the year of the Ox… meaning a year of prosperity through hard work. Let’s hope that that is, indeed, the year we have.

Anyway, becuase of the new year, Dang and I got a long weekend. We were off the 24th through the 27th. So, we got some time to rest and have a little fun.

Over the weekend, we got snow. This one was a pretty one. I had to go to the Kwang Meyong Library to teach a private lesson, and, on the way there, I found a beautiful mountain park. It was awesome with a fresh snow on the ground. When it snows again, I’m taking my wife for a walk there. I think it will really take her breath away.

As I mentioned earlier, I’m teaching a few privates now. I had my first over the weekend. He’s a marketing manager in the Nestle corp, and I’m teaching him Business English. This is my first time teaching adult ESL, and I think that I’m going to like it.

On Mon, we went to a large indoor theme park called Lotte World. Dang took a lot of pictures and you’ll be able to see them on DelousMorgan.com soon.We truly had a good time. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Mama and I were like children… she even got me on the carousel. I got her on the roller coaster ,The French Revolution (I’m still trying to figure out that theme), on the first seat. We were “pooped” at the end of the day… but it was sooooooo much fun.

I continued my work redesigning my website, DelousMorgan.com. I completely redid the framework, look, functionality, and purpose. It’s cleaner, more powerful, and has many more features. Just wait, in a few weeks, it’s going to be really “fleshed out,” I think.

Well, it’s time to go and see what another week brings. Be good, kind, and healthy.
